The Cockerel Appeal was officially launched on Saturday 30th January at 10:00am, outside the west door of St Mary's.

Since 1793 the Golden Cockerel weathervane has sat at the pinnacle of St Mary's great spire, some 250ft above the nave and the marketplace below. It is much loved by the people of Newark, churchgoers and visitors alike. But in early 2007 the Golden Cockerel was found to be in imminent danger of coming crashing to the ground, and it had to be removed from the spire due to public safety concerns.
The stonework of the spire has become weak with centuries of wear, wind and rain, and the very top part will have to be rebuilt.
This renovation and reinstallation of the Cockerel will cost: £90,000
So far £31,983 has been raised but there is still a long way to go!
