George Richford, Master of the Song School (St Mary's, Newark)

George Richford was appointed at St Mary Magdalene in May 2009 and has enjoyed settling in to the bustling market town of Newark. He was previously the Director of the Girls' Choir at Newcastle Cathedral and was acting Director of Music there in 2008. He has been for 6 years Director of St John’s College Chapel Choir in Durham University and has toured, recorded and broadcast with his choirs on numerous occasions. He has directed the Borders Cathedral Festival in Edinburgh Cathedral and conducted the joint choirs of Hexham Abbey, and Durham and Newcastle Cathedrals in various festivals.

George is a bass and alto and enjoys singing from time to time at neighbours Southwell Minster and Lincoln Cathedral and continues to play the organ. He was Organist of Sunderland Minster (of the Greater Churches Group) and looks forward to recording his first Solo organ CD in 2010. George is also a composer and has several published works to his name and has had works premiered in the SAGE Gateshead, Durham and Newcastle Cathedrals, Westminster Abbey, St Martin in the Fields and on BBC Radio 4.
